mascarade bulgare
In 2018, I discovered the tradition of masked carnival in Bulgaria, a ritual where the boundary between the living and the spirits fades away. From 2019, I immersed myself in this practice by traveling across the country with a local journalist, meeting the bearers of this tradition. This carnival, born in a rural context marked by fears related to the seasons, made it possible to ward off evil spirits and guarantee the fertility of the land. True mediators between man and the invisible, the frightening costumes embody mythological figures. This ritual, sacred and deeply social, unites the community, breaks down hierarchies and celebrates life.

My documentary work bears witness to the longevity of this tradition, blending intimate immersion and universal reflection on human resilience.
